'I started reading chick lit when I was on holiday a few years back,' says Nicola. 'and was amazed at how similar they all seemed to be. Many were almost pre-feminist and seemed to be concerned with
dizzy women with uncontrollable hair called Poppy or Lizzy - always little girl names - who had an obsessive/compulsive need to make cakes or biscuits to get their man. I wanted to move away from that and focus more on real, modern women with real problems/concerns and who weren't necessarily in a good place in their lives.'
Although Nicola was born in Lincoln, her parents were both Dutch. 'My mother is a real Scandinavian liberal, as is my father, and I think
their attitudes about how people should behave to each other rubbed off on me. Sometimes, when I'm reading my own stuff back, I can see my mother in some of the more feisty and uncompromising characters!'
Nicola's first three novellas have just been released in an eBook compilation called 'Affairs Of The Heart', currently available on Amazon.
